Azkaine Ascain
Ascain, just six kilometres from the Ocean, is in a heavenly spot, snuggled between the meandering Nivelle River and the crescent formed by the mountains Esnaur, Bizkarzun and the Rhune (905m).
The heart of local life is in the very centre of the village, with its church (classified as a historical monument), its fronton (wall for playing Basque ball games) and its Labourdine-style houses. A roman bridge, also a classified monument, attracts many visitors. As well as having been awarded 3 flowers in the French “Village fleuri” contest, Ascain is also an attractive place for tourists, who can make the most of its 9 hotels, restaurants, guest houses, B&Bs and 2 camp sites. It also has a large sporting complex where people can go swimming, do athletics or play pelota.
The surrounding landscape is characterised by the traditional farming activities of the region (cattle and sheep breeding). Other sectors of activity are progressively developing: craft industries, companies, a small industry that exploits the stone of the Rhune, cider-making industries…
