Biriatu Biriatou

Biriatou is a rural commune with steep relief and is thus classified as a mountainous area. The proximity of the coast is yet another asset for this small village.

It looks out over the Bidassoa valley, a natural border, and sits at the very foot of the Pyrenees and notably the "Xoldokogaina" pass. S/he who is brave enough to climb to the summit will be rewarded with a breathtaking view. The village and its market place –a classified site- are in an exceptional spot which attracts a great number of visitors and keen hikers, followers of the GR10, a footpath which crosses the Pyrenees.

The village can now be easily accessed by the motorway exit no 1. Recognized for its tranquillity, charm and gastronomy, Biriatou is a typical example of a traditional Basque village.

This former district of Urrugne was made independent in 1603. Its patron saint is Saint Martin and a village fete in his honour is held every year on the 11 November. The church is surrounded by Hilarris (disk-shaped funerary steles), symbols of tradition. Since 1997, the village has its own “Fronton, mur à gauche”, where some exciting games of pelota are played.
