Getaria Guéthary

Guéthary is a typical Basque village, a former whaling port which opens out to the ocean and is now world famous for its surfing spots and family beaches.
The view from the heights of Guéthary is simply stunning: the ocean’s crescent stretches from the never-ending sands of the Landes coast to the mountains of the Spanish Basque country.
Owing to this exceptional setting, the village, which only counted a hundred or so houses for 600 inhabitants at the beginning of the XXth century, has doubled its population (1296 inhabitants censused in 1999). It has a surface area of 142 hectares.
The commune which earned its modest living from fishing and farming now relies on tourism as its main economic resource.
