Sara Sare
Sare is located in the inland Basque country, at the foot of the Rhune (905m, the region’s mythical peak) and of the Atxuria (756m) and is proud to be one of the most picturesque villages of France. As well as sturdy XVIIth century houses, the village also has many religious buildings such as the church Saint Martin, which dates back to the XVIIth century and the chapel Saint Catherine.
Sare is faithful to the region’s traditions and trans-border lifestyle. The 32km border that it shares with Spain strongly influenced its history and it was long considered as the smuggling capital of the Basque Country.
Its economy is still centred on farming and pastoral activities (sheep, pottocks).
Sare’s prehistoric caves, the small train of the Rhune, the Gateau Basque museum, Haranea, and the Ortillopitz farm make it an emblematic spot for tourists.
