Donibane lohizune St Jean de Luz

Saint-Jean-de-Luz sits at the opening of the Nivelle valley, in an amphitheatre-shaped harbour between two headlands: a place of choice for this town, located to the South of the Basque country and close to the Spanish border. The commune stretches out alongside the ocean, over 7.5 kilometres of coastline.

In addition to these natural areas, the town has an exceptional urban heritage, which has been preserved thanks to the implementation of a heritage preservation policy. The square Louis XIV and the port make up the typically Basque town centre, which for the most part dates back to the XVIIth century. The Church Saint Jean Baptiste and beautiful monuments of civil architecture, witnesses of the town’s rich past, contribute to its renown.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz was a port town up until the late sixties and became an important tourist resort in the seventies. It is now a medium-sized town whose lively centre offers great possibilities for shopping. Saint-Jean-de-Luz also boasts several attractive industrial estates (Za de Laïtz and de Jalday) which are close to the major transport links.
